ERLA BROWNE nee HASSELL

Erla Browne, née Hassell, 21st February 1917 – 1st October 2019. Widow of Lester Browne. Mother of Betty and the late Peter and David. Sister of the late Eric and Randolph. Aunt of Albert, Shirley, Geoffrey, Trevor, Jeanette, Margaret and the late Frank, and Rosie. Sister-in-law of Celena and the late Annie Ifill, May Hewitt, Elaine Wilkins, Sylvia Maughan and Doris Hassell. Grandmother of Anna, Rebecca, Natalie and Allison. Great grandmother of Eleanor, Bethan, and Georgia. Mother-in-law of Charlotte and the late Mike. Teacher and other duties pre and post retirement at St Gabriel’s School. A member of St Cyprian’s for many years from her own childhood through to that of her grandchildren. Joined St George’s Parish Church while she ‘snowbirded’ with George and Jackie Brathwaite after moving to England in 1999 to live with her daughter Betty.

A Memorial Service will be held at St Cyprian’s Church, George Street, St. Michael on Tuesday 25 October 2022 at 10 am, following which, her ashes will be interred in Westbury Cemetery. The family invites you to follow the service via live stream at https://youtu.be/gjs9mJoykgo 

JAMES BEND

BEND, James Ethelbert, aged 77 years, late of #119 Warrens Terrace East, St Thomas, formerly of Ashton Hall, St Peter.

Husband of Anita Brenda Bend, née Boyce. Father of Sabrina Hinds (Canada), Sophia Bend (QEH), Shelly Bend (BVI) and father-in-law of Kasper Hinds (Canada). Grandfather of Krista and Jaden Hinds (Canada). Son of the late James Albert Bend and Ivy Eileen Bend, née Hinds. Brother of the late Arnesta “Nesta” Rochester, Desmore Bend and Esther Bend; Carmay “Bea” Watson (USA), Wilfred “Ted” Bend (UK), Janice Bend (Canada), Everton Bend (Canada) and Wilma Burnham. Beloved brother-in-law, uncle and cousin of many.

Former Head of Department of the Industrial Arts Department at the Parkinson Memorial Secondary School and former Assistant Superintendent of the Barbados and Virgin Islands Districts. Former pastor of various Wesleyan Holiness Churches across Barbados and First Wesleyan Holiness Church in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Relative of the Bend, Benn, Scantlebury, Hinds, Edwards, Vaughan, Dottin, Harris, Cox, Thomas, Jordan, Boyce and Cumberbatch families. Colleague of ministers of religion of the Wesleyan Holiness Church, New Testament Church, Nazarene Church and other christian denominations.  Close friend of Rev Orvil Taylor, Mr Martin Cox, Mr Darwin Dottin, Ms Pauline McCollin, Sis Tulip Smith, Sis Genevieve Turner. Loved and respected by many of his former peers, congregants, students, extended relatives and friends, who are too numerous to mention.

Viewing of the body will be held at the Faith Wesleyan Holiness Church, Jackmans, St Michael, from 4pm to 6 pm on Friday, 21 October 2022.

A service of thanksgiving and interment will be held on Saturday, 22 October 2022 and attendees are asked to assemble at the Chapel at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Hall, St Peter by 10:00am to allow the prompt 10:30am start. 

Floral tributes may be sent to Bryans Funeral Home, Belmont Road, St Michael, no later than 8:00am on Saturday, 22 October 2022.
